The new hit show YOU makes you root for the bad guy until you see his real side. A bookstore manager named Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) crosses paths with one of his customers, Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) an aspiring writer known mostly as Beck throughout the series. He immediately develops an awkward crush, which turns into a more sinister obsession. This bizarre type of love makes him do crazy things such as steal her phone and look at her through her apartment window. This “love” he feels also makes him kidnap and murder Beck’s friends. His obsession with Beck is toxic, but he believes he is doing what is best for her by removing any obstacle that is in the way of them being together. At the end of Season one with around two episodes left, you realize Beck has discovered the “real” Joe. They both go to the same counselor Dr. Nicky and Joe ends up dumping Beck and getting a new girl that same day. Dr. Nicky then tells both of them that they belong together, but Beck is hesitant and goes through Joe’s past. She notices that there was a girl Joe dated before named Candace Stone, who supposedly moved away. In the last episode of the first season, while Joe is out getting breakfast, Beck goes to the bathroom finds a hidden box of Joe’s stuff. After finding the box filled with links to Joe’s disturbing secrets, Beck then tries to leave because she’s terrified of her life. Boom, that’s when Joe locks her up in a box in a basement library, and Season 1 is ended there.
Throughout the show, I really felt that Joe was the good guy and it really shocked me that he ended up being the bad guy. Although Joe was a player and went through many girlfriends through season one, I figured him and Beck would stay together for a while. In my opinion, I think that Beck will get out of the box. Candace Stone who is an ex-girlfriend of Joe I think will be the one to help Beck become free. I’m also glad that there will be a season two because the tv show makes you sit on the edge of your chair the whole time.
