This year, the Hastings High boys track team has the fastest 4 by 100 meter relay time in Class B.
“Our fastest time is 43.54 seconds. We did it at the Holdrege Invite,” sophomore Zaide Weidner said.
Sophomore Carson Shoemaker starts the race, then hands the baton to sophomore Austin Nauert. Then, sophomore David Smith gives it to the anchor, Weidner. The team credits their success to training and offseason workouts.
“We credit our success to the hard work we have done and lifting every day, also competing against each other to get faster,” Smith said.
Despite this, they faced many bumps in the road this year, like anyone else.
“North Platte was difficult because they were fast, also shin splints and just staying healthy were some of the challenges we faced,” Nauert said.
Before a meet, they have a routine that helps them to get into the right mindset.
“We kind of joke around in our 4 by 100. We try to have fun. We try to get our anxiety and nervousness down,” Smith said.
As the only sophomores on the team, they hope to decrease their time with the years to come. Next year the boys will have one less person since David Smith will be moving to Georgia. Districts are this Thursday at Lexington.
“I hope we can make a statement at districts and be able to win,” Weidner said.
