Science teacher Shelly Mau has volunteered for 11 years to run Science club and keep students involved with science.
“We do not get any funding for our club so we go out and clean barns for money or have bake sales. It is a good way to stay involved. We also do a lot of volunteer work,” Mau said.
Science club has grown a lot in the last couple of years, therefore there are more opportunities for students to help with projects around the community.
“Every year we help with the groundwater festival. We also pick up litter in parks around town, and maintain the turtle garden. One thing that I like to have the kids be involved in is our community, so a lot of the time we will go visit places that are right here in Hastings, like the observatory, Dutton Lainson, and Sentinel Plastic. It is good for them to understand how science is involved in many jobs,” Mau said.
November 18, you will see many students wearing a shirt that states “If you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the precipitation.”
Science club members will be sporting their club shirt to encourage students, teachers, and many others to come support them at the Pizza Hut on 12th Street. Science club members will be working from 5:00 to 8:00.
They want a lot of people to come because at the end of the night they get 20 percent of all sales from 5:00 to 8:00, plus all tips.
“I think that it will be a really fun night. I am hoping that the students will bring their friends for a pizza night or bring their family,” senior Marika VanBrocklin said.
President of Science club senior Dakota Anderson will be there to eat a lot pizza for his club.
“I will be going to raise money for our club so it will make it cheaper to go on trips. I also encourage everyone to come and support the club.”
