On Monday February 19, Student Council hosted a district convention for area schools. The theme for this year was Kindness. Tasia Theoharis, Student Council President, says that they were tired of hearing about leadership, and they wanted to do something new. The tagline was, “Search, Save, Spread Kindness.”
“We talked about simple things that kindness can help out in many different avenues, without costing anything,” student council adviser Jim Fielder said.
Their day featured guest speaker Brady Rhodes from Big Brothers, Big Sisters talking about kindness. “He talked to us about when you listen, even that shows kindness,” Theoharis said.
The charity that Student Council represents is Make-a-Wish. “We had representatives from other schools tell what their student council has been doing to raise money for Make-A-Wish,” sophomore Erika Hernandez said. Hernandez continued, “We can use some of their ideas to bounce off of, or steal their ideas if we think it would be an effective way for Hastings High to raise money.”
Hastings High hosts this convention every four years in a rotation between multiple schools in the area.
“It took a lot of teamwork to put this together, everyone had to pull their weight,” Theoharis said.
The day consisted of much more, area schools traveled to mini-sessions throughout the day.
Theoharis explains one of the sessions, “We did a kindness rocks project, put a message on them and hide them for people to find, as a kind reminder.”
Sophomore Jack Coil shared a different kindness activity.
“My favorite activity was when we sent “Thank You” letters to troops that were deployed and serving our country,” Coil said.
Overall, Theoharis said, “We’re looking to keep implementing this in student council and continuing to be kind.”
