It is a brand new year, with brand new seniors. With several essays to type, scholarships and colleges to apply to the seniors prove to be the hardest working students in the entire school. With so many things to get done, a checklist could be very handy to use.
“I am mostly working on raising my ACT scores. I also am going to focus a lot on my school work,” senior Meagan Reiners said.
The majority of the senior class is focusing on having high grades and high ACTS scores to get into the college of their choosing.
“I have already got accepted into my first choice, Nebraska Wesleyan. However, I plan on applying to UNL and UNO,” Reiners said.
Scholarships are also a priority to many seniors. Usually all of the graduating seniors who attend college apply for scholarships to help their college fund. They have a variety of options but are planning now.
“No sports scholarships. I haven’t really thought about what exact scholarships, but I am going to apply for a lot of in-state scholarships. I want to major in physical therapy or pharmacy. I want to keep my grades up, but not get too stressed out and make this the best year,” Reiners said.
The biggest question out of all is asked again for one last time. What do you want to be when you grow up? Senior Lizzeth Gomez is thinking about majoring towards nursing.
Apart from all the hard work there is to prepare for college. There are other things to accomplish rather than just their education.
“I want to get through this year and get accepted to a University or Hastings college,” Gomez said.
Guidance counselor Jalaene Choquette thinks that it is very important to look at all the options and start thinking what is available after high school.
“My top priority is to help them prepare what to do after graduation and help them explore all options,” Choquette said.
She says it is important to keep your options open.
“Not everyone has to choose 4- year colleges. Maybe some students might want to enroll in the military or work for sometime. It’s important to realize they should be very careful with debt and it would be smart to make a plan before graduating,” Choquette said.
There is also a very special opportunity for seniors to have some fun and take a break from school. That day is when a group or groups of seniors decide to pull off a prank.
“I think it would be funny if we all didn’t show up for our last day,” Reiners said.
Gomez thinks that the school should have a fake fire alarm and when everyone’s outside, the seniors throw water balloons at the rest of options there are out there.
