The Grinch and Horton and Mayzie oh my! All of my favorite Dr. Seuss characters together side by side.
Come out and support your theatre department’s performance of Seussical the Musical. There’s rhythms and rhymes from beginning to end, and you’ll see just how talented students at Hastings High are.
The Cat in the Hat (senior Lindsey LaBrie) tells the story of Horton, (senior Carlos Guerrero) an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including the mayor’s son Jojo who is sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton has made it his mission to protect the Who’s and prove to us all, a person is a person no matter how small. Along the way Horton must also guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the negligent Mayzie La Bird (junior Savannah Santos.) Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial his trusty neighbor Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.
The musical is directed by Katie Funkey, head of the theatre department, along with Musical Director Tim Canady, and help from accompanist Mindee Rowan. Together these three made up a dream team any actor or actress would be lucky to work under.
The choreography, created by Emily Dunbar was simple, yet impactful, proving that less can be more. The set of the musical was minimal, with the crew paying extremely close attention to detail. The main focus of the set were risers made to look like the book spines of Seuss’s most famous books. The frame of the stage was decorated by the easily recognizable Truffula trees from The Lorax, colorfully adding the last needed touch to really bring Dr. Seuss story books to life. Throughout the musical props were rolled on and off the stage giving a fun change of scenery. The costuming for this musical was a definite hit in my book! I enjoyed the simplistic modern take on the animals’ costumes. The chorus had multiple costume and accessory changes, each correlating perfectly with the song and scene. I looked forward to seeing what they would come out wearing next! The Bird Girls’ costumes were sassy and fun, but I’d have to say Mayzie’s costume stole the show!
I’d 10 out of 10 recommend that you bring a friend! Seussical the Musical opens tonight, and you won’t want to be late! Break a leg!
