As a sophomore in show choir, I know what hard work is. This is my second year in show choir, as well as the second year it has been active in our school.
In show choir, we work extremely hard. I’m not saying we work more than other show choirs, I’m just saying we have so much more to prove than others do. We are still the babies, but we didn’t come to play.
We have our practices every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9. It’s late, and it’s hard. Since I’m also in sports, I wouldn’t say it’s as physically demanding, but it is very mentally testing.
From last year’s experiences, I know a few things. No matter how frustrating some practices may get, it’s worth it in the end. The friends you make in show choir are everlasting.
The competitions are based on skill, but also luck. All judges like different things, and if they don’t like your costume or your songs, you’re less likely to place
Last year, we got third in a competition, as well as seventh, and twelfth. It all depends on what the judges are feeling. We’re still a new show choir and have a ways to go.
We performed for the first time with costumes and a live audience on December 18th. It was nerve racking and thrilling all at the same time.
I think I speak for the whole show choir when I say that it was a success. It was far from perfect, but it felt good to show everyone what we’ve been working on so diligently for such a long time.
I was actually surprised to see how many people stayed after the Christmas concert to see us perform, and thrilled by everyone’s compliments.
In my own household, in fact, it was a hit. My youngest sister was asking me to teach her the songs, while my mother mentioned how she might not mind going to the competitions this year.
I can confidently say the girls’ dresses and boys’ tuxedos had a lot to do with it. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the dresses we had last year, but this year’s was on a whole other level.
On stage, I could feel the great energy from the crowd, and fed off that. I would be lying if I said I didn’t shake a little during our first song.
With the audience’s applause in my ears, and the beat in my feet, I can say with pride that our debut was one of the best performances I have given in my life.
I hope this is also some foreshadowing for this year’s competitions. It would be nice to whirl and twirl our way to a trophy, but just performing is an award in itself.
