Five Hastings High students were recognized for their involvement and academic achievement.
The Five students recognized were juniors Misael Heras and Graciella Lopez and seniors Carlos Bautista Guerrero, Adolfo Diaz, and Adriana Salaz.
They were recognized in the Gallery of Stars at the Hispanic Latino Summit that was put on by the Nebraska Department of Education and the Latino American Commission.
The event was hosted at the University of Nebraska Kearney on October 27. All of the members of the Multicultural Club went to the Latino Summit.
Heras has been in Multicultural Club for all three years he’s been at the high school.
“I love being in Multicultural Club. I can go on college trips, meet people of different races and backgrounds, and go to events like the dia de muerto celebration at Hastings College,” Heras said.
Heras was very content with being recognized for his academic achievements.
“Receiving this award was a big deal for me. I’ve tried to do my best in school and it’s nice to see that that my hard work wasn’t all for nothing,” Heras said.
Lopez was also proud of her recognition for this award.
“It felt good because there were only a few people from every school that were recognized, and I was one of five at HHS so that was pretty cool,” Lopez said.
Lopez feels that the award was due to her involvement in a lot of the clubs that HHS has to offer.
“If you’re involved a lot and have leadership-like qualities then you were nominated. I think I was nominated because I’m involved in a lot of things, not just sports, so that might have been the reason,” Lopez said.
As a senior, Guerrero has big plans and this award is a nice prize.
“Next year I’m going to UNL and I’m going to major in photography and media arts. This award is a big deal for me. This award and future ones like it will help me stay focused in my work and remind me to maintain a positive attitude to better myself as an individual,” Guerrero said.
It goes to show, Hastings High is full of people deserving of recognition.
