Mark Gueswell is a student-teacher this semester at Hastings High with Mrs. Sadd. He is teaching Accounting, Information Technology l and Web Page Design.
“I can say that it [accounting] is the most challenging course to teach in my opinion,” Gueswell said.
Gueswell admires his students and loves passing on his wisdom to them as a teacher.
“I love the puzzle on trying to figure out how each student ticks to get them to strive for greatness,” Gueswell said.
Mr. Yazgerdi, a science teacher at Hastings High recommended that Gueswell consider being a teacher. Gueswell coached tennis with Yazgerdi at Hastings College, where he got his master’s degree.
“I’ve always loved what Mr. Yazdgerdi does with his classroom and his community and the impact he made on me made me consider teaching just like he was,” Gueswell said.
As one can imagine, balancing coaching Hastings College’s tennis team and teaching can be difficult.
“It’s tough. Sometimes I don’t even get home until 7 p.m., and I get to see my wife for a little bit and then most likely prep for school and look at the practice plan for the next day,” Gueswell said.
After almost a month of teaching, Gueswell still doesn’t feel like a teacher.
“It’s a blast creating the culture and work ethic that I want to see in my classroom and trying to inspire my students like so many other people have inspired me,” Gueswell said.
Gueswell is very excited about what the future holds for him as a teacher.
“I know this is what God has called me to at this season of life and I know so many doors will be opened,” Gueswell said.
