What do students really think about their high school experience? Several students have a sense of what they love and what they’d like to see change in the school.
One of the most frequently mentioned positives about Hastings Senior High is the sense of community.
“I feel like everyone knows each other,” junior Ava Satterly said. “It’s like a big family. The teachers are really supportive and always willing to help whenever I need it.”
Another positive aspect is the variety of extracurricular activities available. From sports, to arts, to academic clubs, there’s something for everyone.Â
“I’m involved in girls varsity basketball, and it’s been a great experience,” junior Lauryn Boutin said. “We have a great coach who pushes us to be the best we can, and it’s been a great way to hold myself accountable, along with the team.”
However, having favorite parts of something comes with having least favorite parts. The second floor bathroom has been redone in the last 9 years, but some students still point out areas that could use improvement, particularly in terms of facilities.
“The bathrooms are sometimes gross, and often don’t smell good,” junior Mayrin Torres said. “It’s something that definitely needs attention.”
Another common complaint is the cafeteria food.
“Lunch has good options involving vegetables and fruit, but the main dish is never good,” sophomore Isleen Robinson said. “I wish that they focused more on the actual taste of the food.”
Though no school can be perfect, among HHS students, there’s a strong sense of pride among students.
“Overall, I think we have a pretty great school,” Satterly said. “There’s always room for improvement, but I’m proud to be a Hastings Tiger.”
