Super Bowl LIV Preview
On February 2 the Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the San Francisco 49ers in Miami, Florida for the 54 annual Superbowl. In this monumental game, the Kansas City Chiefs will be the home team and the San Francisco 49ers will be away team.
The Kansas City Chiefs have very powerful offense this season with their third-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes, coming off of an MVP season in 2018. Mahomes has thrown for 4,031 yards and 5 interceptions. He will be throwing the ball to star tight end, Travis Kelce, a veteran on the team since 2013. Kelce has 1,229 receiving yards and five touchdowns. The Chiefs receiving corps are lead by speedy receiver Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins combined for 1,533 yards: Hill having 860, Watkins having 673. The running back, Damien Williams, has ran for 498 yards and five touchdowns. The powerful Chiefs offense will be a perfect matchup for the 49ers defense.
The San Francisco 49ers are no stranger to the Superbowl themselves, having won five already. They will be hoping to make it six coming this February. Their quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, has thrown for 3,978 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Garoppolo only played for three games in the 2018 season tearing his ACL week three against the Kansas City Chiefs. The third-year tight end George Kittle has caused a commotion this season with 1,053 yards and five touchdowns. A recent addition to the team, Emmanual Sanders caught 66 passes for 869 yards and five touchdowns. Sanders was traded by the Denver Broncos in week seven. Rookie Deboo Samuel has three touchdowns and 802 yards. Raheem Mostert has rushed for eight touchdowns and 772 yards. Both Kansas City and San Francisco have a completely developed offense and are balanced equally, so it may come down to the defensive side of the ball to get stops.
The Kansas City defense came up strong this season with impact players putting up big numbers. Chris Jones, defensive tackle for the Chiefs had nine sacks, leading the team, and Frank Clark had eight. The defense combined for 45 sacks throughout their season. Tyrann Mathieu led the team in interceptions this season with a total of four interceptions this season. The whole defense had 16 interceptions. Will this Chief defense be enough to stop the 49ers offense?
The San Francisco 49ers defense was stand out this season with prominent figures like rookie Nick Bosa, defensive end. Bosa averaged nine sacks and an interception for the 49ers. Arik Armsteadhad 10 total sacks on the season. The 49ers totaled 48 sacks. Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman caught a total of three interceptions, one of which was returned to their own endzone for a touchdown. The 49ers totaled 12 interceptions. The San Francisco defense has been causing quite a commotion throughout the league this season, hopefully, they keep up this pace at the Superbowl.
