Last year the Girls Basketball team ended on a very high note by attending the State Basketball tournament for the first time in 17 years. Despite losing a key player this year before the season even started, this team is flying high. The Tigers won the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference holiday tournament over semester break for the first time in 21 seasons.
“I think the reason we are so successful is because we work together and we help each other out when we need it. We don’t get frustrated with each; we know it’s important to stick together,” senior Ashley Craig said.
With Sophia Pankratz at the helm of this ship, the Tigers have a record of 9-4. The Tigers knocked Pius X (7-4, No. 4 in NSAA wild-card standings) out of the top 10, putting themselves at number six in the class b rankings. Pius beat Elkhorn one night earlier and has wins against Norris, Seward and Beatrice as well. This win also pushed the Tigers streak to Four wins. This was a historical win for the tigers as well as it is the first win the Tigers have had over Pius X since Coach Greg Mays started here.
“That was a big step for these girls. I assumed they knew they could play with this team and beat them. But we hadn’t beaten Pius since I don’t know when. It certainly hadn’t been since I’ve been here, but in order to stay where we are, we’re going to keep putting in hard work,” Mays said. The Tigers play Grand Island Northwest on Friday at home.
