Working hard for what you want can take you to great places, no matter how far down you start. For Moses Dunbar having a late start in swimming didn’t hold him back.
Senior Moses Dunbar started swimming his freshman year with Hastings Senior High. He felt behind because most varsity swimmers start swimming between ages four and eight.
“I was sorta behind but I was able to catch up to them during my freshman and sophomore year thanks to Coach Charles,” Dunbar said.
Dunbar is participating in four events during the state meet today (2/22) and tomorrow (2/23). He has three team relays and one individual race.
“I’m swimming the 200 medley relay, the 200 free(style) relay, the 400 free(style) relay, and then the 50 free(style),” Dunbar said.
In Dunbar’s eyes, he believed he had a linear progression with his swimming time and lowered it greatly. His best individual time is 22.74 seconds in the 50 relay(style).
“I haven’t gotten so much worse, there have been a few times where I’ve gone down a little bit, but for the most part I’ve only improved,” Dunbar said.
His way of preparing for the race is not a way most people would think, he just keeps his mindset as if it were any other race.
“I have almost no expectations going in, which is nice because with no expectations you can’t really let yourself down,” Dunbar said.
Having one of his relays being seated seventh place in the state, Dunbar thinks he will have good competition.
“Oh yeah for I’ll sure but I’m just excited to be there,” Dunbar said.
