Scary stories, becoming more popular throughout, and because of the fall season, are a favorite among many people. This holiday brings up many seasonal treasures.
Halloween calls for watching these movies with friends and family, scaring each other, laughing, and making memories. Scary movies aren’t just a favorite for friends and family, teachers enjoy them also. In fact, Ms. Schlichtman, an art teacher’s favorite movie is The Blair Witch Project.
“My favorite scary movie is probably The Blair Witch Project because it’s so bizarre. I remember watching it when it first came out and watching them literally just run through dark grass. It’s just bizarre.” Schlichtman said.
The movie was determined to have the “highest scare score” after being ranked by over 50,000 people on IMBd, a website used to rank anything from books to movies. The Blair Witch Project takes place in a dark forest, searching for something dangerous.
“They’re in the woods, it’s a girl and two guys and they’re trying to find the Blair witch to go interview her because she’s some urban legend. Throughout the movie, people kind of disappear. It’s like, home camera made and the girl is the only survivor,” Schilchtman said.
Movies often being determined by how scary they are by ranks on the internet is a decision of the question “should I watch this movie or not?”.
“I would probably rate it a 6 out of 10 on scariness because now that I’m older and can see it’s not probably true makes it less scary, but if I didn’t know any better when I was younger, yeah that could be scary,” Schlichtman said.
Witches and the woods being paired together usually results in a scary movie, but Schilchtman thinks that trueness is what truly makes a movie scary
“Truth just takes it beyond. Some of these scary movies wouldn’t be scary if they weren’t true,” said Schlichtman.
Much like Schlichtman, Ms. Thomas, an English teacher who also has a favorite scary movie which is, in fact, based on a true story.
“My favorite scary movie is probably When a Stranger Calls I have a good memory of it. I watched it with a bunch of my friends in high school and it’s scary but not overwhelming,” Thomas said.
Memories attached to movies are something most people have. Especially in scary movies with friends, which usually result in scary but good memories particularly when the plot is something that could happen to you, so everyone is on edge.
“It’s about a girl who is babysitting and the kids are asleep when she gets there, and then the phone starts ringing but the call is coming from inside the house and someone’s inside. She goes in and outside the house a lot trying to find whoever it is and then the guy ends up chasing her around,” Thomas said.
Schlichtman and Thomas have the same opinion of ratings for both their movies, which are very different but share the same quality of being based on something true.
“I would probably rate it a six, it’s not as scary as some movies I’ve seen, and it’s not violent at all but there are a lot of jumpscares which I end up getting scared by every time. Even when I know they’re coming up,” Thomas said.
These Halloween treasures tend to be most popular when true, many people favor these over other genres, but not all.
“The suspense and the music, not knowing what’s going to happen. I always jump at jumpscares all the time. It doesn’t matter if I know it’s coming up. I think that element of suspense and the unexpected happening, and I think it’s also just the thrill of scary movies. They are predictable and you know they will scare you,” Thomas said.
Suspenseful, yet foreseeable, some of these movies don’t fail to scare, knowing the unexpected is waiting to happen.
“The thrill of scary movies and how they’re sort of predictable and you know something will scare you or something bad will happen. I think that’s what makes them scary and enjoyable,” Thomas said.
