Both the boys and girls teams had qualifiers for the state finals and consolation events. This year’s event was hosted at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, on February 24. Juniors Abbey Fish and Matthew Lauder, and senior Kaitlyn Mousel went to finals. Fish, who has been swimming for 5 years, competed in the 50 and 100 free championships and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Mousel, who has been swimming for 12 years, competed in the 50 and 100 freestyle, along with the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Also, swimming for 11 years, Matthew Lauder competed in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Some other qualifiers include freshman Lucas Sidlo, junior Jaden Ochsner, and senior Abby Lauder.
“I always feel nervous, but I’m usually prepared after all the practice and preparation,” Lauder said.
The time before competing for a state title in any sport can be nerve-wracking, which was the case for all three swimmers. All the people there to support and the environment around the competition can replace the nerves with motivation.
“I was really excited but nervous as well,” Fish said.
Fish placed 3rd in the 50 free along with Mousel who placed 8th. Also, in the 100 free, Fish placed 4th and Mousel placed 16th. Matthew Lauder placed 15th in the 100 free, 12th in the 200 free relay, 17th in the 400 free relay, and 17th in the 50 free. Even with the nerves of competing, there are many aspects surrounding and in addition to the rush of competition that makes the sport what it is and can even be the best part about it.
“The atmosphere is the best part, swimming against some of the best competition and seeing everyone swim so well,” Mousel said.
Matthew Lauder, Fish, and Mousel all recommend trying swimming to others.
“Yes, join swim. I’ve met some of my best friends through swim and made awesome memories through swim. It’s something different to try and the team turns into family,” Mousel said.
