Hastings High’s freshmen mentoring program, also known as FMP, has changed significantly this school year. We look to the mentors and staff involved for insight into the changes of this program.
In the past, an FMP included a T3 class made entirely of freshmen, but that has changed this year. Although FMP will still involve T3, the freshman will be spread thinner and integrated into T3’s with upperclassman to hopefully simplify and cause less stress for teachers and mentors. The program is simplifying for the better of everyone.
¨Ninth grade will not be assigned to one of 16 teachers but, instead, they are sprinkled throughout all T3’s with at least one mentor in that classroom¨ Assistant Principal Rick Ripperger said.
Another difference in this year’s program is the activities. Last year, there were a multitude of activities that were very frequent and repetitive.
¨Freshman would get tired of the lessons or tired of listening, and wouldn’t pay attention or be very cooperative¨ senior mentor Alexis Henry said.
The subtraction of some of these events might just change that.
Throughout all of these changes, some things have stayed the same. The mentors still consist of admirable upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) who work with the freshmen in the classroom.
