Thirsty for a beverage with a citrusy kick? Thanks to the committed workers of Coca-Cola you can. Let’s all take a moment to cheer for the return of Surge. Surge is a 90’s drink that was discontinued in the early 2000’s. For the return, Coca-Cola decided to only sell it in 12 packs of 16 oz cans. This is exclusively sold on Amazon.
So what makes this drink so irresistible? It’s simply because everyone wants a taste of the 90’s. Some people actually grew up drinking Surge.
“I remember drinking surge in junior high but then one day it was discontinued,” Brandon Spencer of Hastings Community Church said.
Why was Surge discontinued in the first place? Surge was first put on the market in Norway in 1996, then in the U.S. in 1997. It was popular for many years, but unfortunately, the popularity began to diminish. By 2001, Coca-Cola made the decision to stop selling it.
“Urge” was the original name for the drink in Norway. When it was introduced to the U.S. Coca-Cola changed the name to Surge. Everyone had the Urge for Surge. Surge is supposed to “Feed the Rush”. That is the catch phrase used in many of the commercials in the late 90’s to advertise Surge.
I decided to take Surge to the test. Since it is a popular drink I anxiously drove to every place I thought might sell it. Only one place had it, Casey’s General Store. Sadly they were sold out and wouldn’t be getting more for another week.
“When we started to sell Surge it sold out in the first two days,” a local Casey’s convenience store employee said.
After a long week of patiently waiting I drove back to Casey’s and bought myself a Surge. I pop open the can (eagerly) and take a sip. HOLY MACKEREL! My taste buds were dancing. It taste like a mix of Mountain Dew and Squirt.
For some people, Surge isn’t something they want to sip on.
“I don’t plan on having any because I need to watch my hourglass figure,” junior Parker Fisbeck said. Â
An hourglass figure is something someone won’t have for long if they are drinking Surge.
Surge contains 56 grams of sugar per 16 ounce can. WHAT?! That is 28 ounces of sugar, which is about 2 ounces of sugar every sip.
Although this is a tooth rotting refresher some enjoy it. “It’s really good and to me and it doesn’t taste like anything I have ever drank before,” junior Blake Douglas said.
Should Surge be consumed every day? I’m not a doctor but, I’d say heck no! That much soda every day can lead to some serious health problems.
According to KSL.com, drinking too much soda causes more problems than an expanding waistline. This much sugar intake can also cause strokes, dementia, and kidney stones.

Surge may be a little unhealthy, but it is incredibly delicious. Surge is something that everyone should try once. Whether you drank it growing up or you’re just craving a little sip of the 90’s.
