This year was a great year for the Tigers with many more wins than last year. The athletes should all feel very proud of themselves as well, for many of the athletes had made personal goals happen and even quite a few made a new school record. All and all it was a phenom of a year for the Tigers.
In the fall, the two sports, football and softball, did very well. Football went 4-5, which is three more wins than last year. For football there were ups and downs, including lingering injuries for some, but for the most part did very well. Football got wins against Gering in the Tiger’s home and season opener, at Alliance versus Schuyler, and versus Lexington in the nail-biting season finale which ended in double overtime. Softball had a phenomenal season, yet again. Their final record was 25-10. The two big wins for Hastings wins were against class-A Kearney and North Platte twice each. There were also a handful of records broken this year such as career hits and batting average. Two of the main record-breakers were junior Libby Knapple and senior Alex Schmidt.
For winter sports, girl’s basketball had very good seasons, continuing the trends of the Tigers. The Lady Tigers went 13-11. The best win class-wise that the Lady Tigers had was against class-A GISH, at the Islanders’ home court. This was also the first time since the 90s that the Lady Tigers made it to State. The boy’s team had a bit of an off-season, ending with a 9-14 record and getting eliminated from the postseason in sub-state by bitter rival Adams Central. They did, however, beat a class-A team in Columbus at home. The wrestlers also had a phenomenal season, sending ten wrestlers to State and going as a team to State Duals. The Tigers also took the Flatwater Fracas in GISH, knocking off the Islanders’ winning streak. Hastings had four wrestlers place at State: Nolan and Connor Laux placed first in their weight classes, and Huy Truong and Brandon Kile placed third in their weight classes. The Lauxes and Truong all pulled off amazing feats, as Nolan finished the season undefeated at 42-0, Connor finished the season with one loss at 42-1, and Troung finished with two losses at 41-2.
The spring sports also are looking superb. The boy’s soccer team is on a bit of a skid, as they are 7-8 right now but are coming off a 2-1 win versus class-A powerhouse Kearney. The girl’s soccer team is 8-7 right now, coming off a loss to Kearney. The Soccer team finishes the regular season versus York. Track and Field is also doing very well and are at a meet today.
