Summer is a time for rejoicing. School is out and students don’t have to go back for three months. They can spend their time doing whatever their young hearts desire. For some students though, there is no getting away. Summer training begins for multiple activities, such as softball, volleyball, football, and even marching band.
“We like to have and 80% attendance rate for summer weights. The volleyball team usually has the highest attendance. If kids want to be prepared for the season they need to start training in the summer,” volleyball coach David Hepner said.
The first game of the season sneaks up out of nowhere and no one wants to be unprepared. Athletes show up in the summer hoping to get bigger, faster, and stronger for the next season.
“Kids have to train to keep up. A lot of the girls do a summer softball league. We also do individual, skill specific practices or workouts,” softball coach Pete Theoharis said.
Many sports and activities begin training almost as soon as school gets out. Summer weights for kids begins in June and individual camps for athletes are throughout the summer as well.
“Band camp begins on July 27th. We have Tuesday night rehearsals in the summer too, to learn the music,” said band director Erin Beave.
Band camp is one of the most grueling camps in the summer. During band camp, kids learn the basic marching band fundamentals, such as how to hold their horn. All of the kids enrolled in band go to band camp. It’s crucial for their success. It is crucial for any teen that wants to be prepared for any sport season, or other curricular activities, to begin training in the summer.
