When the subject of everyone’s favorite sci-fi action flick is brought up, everyone talks about how awesome the lightsabers look or how realistic the aliens are. But now there’s a new buzz about the world, and its name is Disney. That’s right, the company that brought us cutesy movies like Toy Story, Goofy Movie and Lion King has taken up a partnership with Lucas Film. Star Wars fans are outraged, claiming that George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, is off his rocker.
But it was Disney who purchased the Indiana Jones franchise and put it in theatres. It was Disney who put all four Pirates of the Carribean movies on the path to fame. Disney isn’t all about cute movies with a message, they make movies that appeal to all ages.
Disney has also signed agreements with Youtube, Marvel Studios, and Pixar, and there wasn’t a word of complaint. But here’s the kicker:Disney and Lucas have agreed to make three more Star Wars movies. How much farther can the story line go? it’s already been stretched pretty thin. What, are they going to have Johnny Depp portray Luke Skywalker? (We all know how much Disney adores Johnny Depp. Seems like he’s in every recent Disney film.) Or are they going to focus on a young Luke Skywalker growing up on his aunt and uncle’s farm? Just picture it. The opening scene focuses in on a small boy sitting on a sand dune staring out at the moons while a sand monster screams bloody murder in the distance. So heartwarming, isn’t it? But regardless, it’s not going to be pretty.
So is hollywood legend George Lucas off the deep end? Why would he sell half his company to Disney of all places? He’s not crazy, he just wants to retire. That is one of the reasons (if not the only one) Lucas has given up his company.
The only thing Star Wars fans can do at this point is just muddle through this tough time. Disney should just hope that the new Star Wars movies won’t hurt the box office too bad.
