Since the competition lasts from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., the HHS show choir offered breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks and drinks throughout the day.“Concessions is a big deal…, so we have to make sure that all of our stuff is ready to go to not only host groups but also feed 2500 people three meals,” Yost said. Hosting the competition is a fundraiser for the HHS show choir, so each member of Hastings Uncaged was assigned to different jobs throughout the day including hosting one of the schools in the competition, helping with the concessions, and restocking water bottles for the groups to take after their performance, as well as other jobs. Members of Hastings Uncaged restock water bottles outside of the Critique room, a room designated for one of the judges from the competition to give critiques and tips to each group right after they perform. “Each group gets a 30-minute slot with a judge that they go through their show, give them some ideas and some review that is a little bit more in-depth than what you get from a score sheet,” Yost said. The choir department put up signs throughout the school for the competition to direct visiting schools and audience members. Each visiting school is assigned a “home room” for the day, a classroom one of the Hastings Uncaged members is in charge of decorating where each school can put their stuff and hang out in throughout the day. In between each performance, parents and volunteers switch props and any additional risers for the next performance and prepare the stage for the next group to perform. Hastings Uncaged, Hastings High’s show choir, showcased their show entitled “Homegrown” during the competition, however, they didn’t actually compete their show for many different reasons, one being that the host of the competition picks the judges for the competition. Because of the design of the HHS auditorium, props, or extra risers aren’t able to be rolled on or off stage, so volunteers from each school load the props onto one of the two trucks that drive onto the ramp that connects to the auditorium stage. In between each performance, the volunteers from the most recent performance load all their group’s equipment onto one of the buses that drives it to be unloaded into the South gym of the high school. After a group’s equipment is loaded onto one of the buses, the bus drives to the doors that lead into the hallway between the North and South gyms. The equipment is then unloaded from the bus into the South gym until that team makes it into the finals and has to perform again or loads their equipment onto their school bus to drive back to their school. During the first semester of the school year, the HHS auditorium underwent the first part of renovations that are planned to be continued over the summer. The first part of the renovations included replacing the incandescent light fixtures with new color-changing LED fixtures. At the end of each performance, music is cued and the additional lights are turned on to entertain the audience in between performances. 1:3 Productions picked the music to play in between performances and was in charge of running the equipment throughout the day. The HHS show choir rented a few additional lights from R8 Productions to use for the competition. The HHS show choir stores things such as the reusable signs they use for hosting Tiger Clash in the storage room under the middle part of the back section of the auditorium seating. After the last performance of the finals, songs like the YMCA, Sweet Caroline, and the Cha Cha Slide are played over the speakers in the auditorium as the finalists wait for the results of the competition to be announced. Show choir members and audience members alike turned their phone flashlights on during a slow song towards the end of the competition. Christian Yost, the director of Hastings Uncaged, announced the results of the competition at the end of the night. Hastings Uncaged members handed out the first through sixth place trophies as well as the awards for best choreography and best vocals. Like this:Like Loading...
