Like lots of people and groups, the Tigerettes are having their own fair share of problems with Covid-19, but they are pushing through and getting things done.
The Hastings High dance team has had some problems with Covid-19 since the beginning of their season. The team had to do their tryouts virtually, where a group of judges submitted their votes and comments through google forms.
“Tryouts were done virtually where the girls learned dances from a series of videos and likewise, they submitted videos of themselves for review,” Meagan Stoner said.
Most years the Tigerettes have a rush where they gather the team up and go have breakfast. This year they couldn’t; the most they could do was leave gifts at their house.
“Instead of doing a typical rush where we steal the girls out of their homes at 4:30 a.m. and go to breakfast before school, we actually went to each girl’s home and delivered a gift and balloons, and for the first-year members and captains we put a decorated sign in their yard,” Stoner said.
Later on in the season they started finding some ways around the Covid-19 problem by practicing in places where they were able to social distance.
“Then we started meeting in the Chautauqua pavilion so we were outside and I could be sure everyone stayed more than 6 feet apart by making chalk markings on the ground where they were supposed to stand,” Stoner said.
The dance team has been through a lot this year, and they will continue to have problems. They have been keeping a positive attitude, and being appreciative of what they have been able to do.
“Every year is different, but this year I would describe the team with one word: appreciative. When we started learning our sideline dances this summer and our first football game dances, we were very uncertain that we would even be on the field performing them at all. When it came to our first game, it was probably one of the most fun game experiences we have ever had,” Stoner said.
