The New Year started off with a bang as our very own Hastings Tigers improv team took first in the state competition.
The last time Hastings High came close to winning state was two years ago when they tied for first with another team, and improv team vice president, Joe Prickett, says that winning was an incredible accomplishment for this team.
The improv team is a young team this year with only one senior and the majority of the team being sophomores and juniors. The team only had one freshman compete at state. That freshman, Annie Davis, said that the competition was very overwhelming.
“ It was very intimidating knowing that most of the people there are older and more experienced,” Davis said.
The team specializes in fast thinking and figuring out what to say on the fly. It involves a series of very complex games and the Tigers have proved that they are the best.
“ It requires a lot of fast thinking, and seeing other teams do well can mess with the thinking progress,” Davis said.
Being a part of the team that took first place was an amazing experience for Davis.
“ It was awesome just to be a part of the team that won state, and I hope and wish for much more to come with my three years left,” Davis said.
Prickett says that being a good team member requires much more than just being funny.
“ You have to be able to listen, and kind of build up the chemistry, and get to the point where you really get to know each other,” Prickett said.
There are many strong points to the Hastings High improv team but Prickett says that there is one major strong point.
“ We are all friends, and we all really love doing it. We are all very committed, and we like when we have to have practice. We just really enjoy it, we just really enjoy our time together and when we get to be together,” Prickett said.
Hastings High Improv will be a thing to watch as they are only losing one senior and bringing back a solid group of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to next year’s team. They will be gunning for more success at the state competition.
