The HHS Wellness Team is asking students and teachers to join the Heart Power Challenge through the month of March. The challenge consists of logging at least 100 miles of activity between Valentine’s Day and the end of March.
The Wellness Team is a mix of students, teachers, administrators, faculty and community members who strive to help others gain mental and physical aspects of a healthy person.
“I enjoy working with the Wellness Team and love coming up with challenges for us all to complete to work to become healthier individuals, both mentally and physically,” HHS Wellness team member Christy Kreutzer said.
The Wellness Team decided on allowing non-physical activities such as meditation and journaling as a mile.
“Meditation and journaling have shown to boost mindfulness, memory, communication, promote better sleep, and more self-confidence. Coloring is also a form of meditation as it has been shown to lower stress and anxiety levels, and it unplugs the brain from technology which promotes creation overconsumption,” Kreutzer said.
However, adding non-physical activities isn’t the only change done to the Heart Power challenge. The challenge originates from the WellPower Challenge, a Challenge for all Nebraskans to log 100 activity miles for 6 weeks.
“My dad and I entered a Nebraska challenge that was basically like the Heart Power Challenge. I brought it up to Mrs. Kreutzer because it’s a fun and easy way to get people moving,” Sophomore HHS Wellness team member Abby Fielder said.
The Wellness Team is all about promoting healthy habits. Other than the Heart Power challenge, they have helped individual students, clubs, and sports teams in forming these habits. The Wellness Team is also open to letting others, whether student or teacher, join the team, all someone has to do is contact a wellness team member.
“We have purchased snacks and coloring books for the PAWS room, we have purchased personal hygiene supplies for the HHS Food Pantry, we have provided staff with healthy snacks on in-service days, provided snacks for the Student Council Scavenger Hunt sent snacks on the track bus for the district track meet,” Kreutzer said.
