September 9 through 14 was Spirit Week for Hastings High. Every year includes fun themes for students to show their pride for the school and to get pumped up for Homecoming. However this year students did not show any kind of pride due to the lack of school spirit.
We, The Tigercub Staff, feel that not having any school spirit can be a problem for HHS.
It feels that Homecoming week did not even exist. Even though the Student Council came up with creative themes, not very many students dressed up for them. We thought at first that because it was Monday, students just didn’t remember, and more people would dress up for the rest of the week. But as the week progressed, we realized that was not the issue.
School spirit is what a school and its people identify with. Without it, high school would not be the same.
First, athletic events would not be as exciting. The team would not feel motivated without anyone cheering them on to victory. And that would give an advantage to the to other team that does have school spirit.
Also, our school would be looked down on by other schools. Pride is big, and if HHS is not showing any school spirit, other schools will think that we do not want to support our school for anything. This shows a lack of pride in HHS.
School spirit does not only cheer the team on victory, but it also helps students to do better in school. Having school spirit shows a student’s commitment to school. Students who are involved in activities and show pride and spirit are more interested in their overall performance in school.
We would also like to point out that our student section would not be at its best if not everyone showed up to support the sport team that is playing that night. The student section is a place to converse with friends and to cheer the Tigers.
However the fun is not always in the student section. Having pride in HHS makes school just more exciting. We think that students would be in better mood if they are excited about an event that is going to happen later in the evening of that day.
The Tiger Cub staff encourages students to have more pride in our school and to believe in it. Start attending games, follow the themes, and cheer the Tigers on to victory. Having school spirit makes Hastings High a better and more positive learning environment.
