Hastings High offers a wide variety of art classes, all of which provide benefits to students.
One advantage is the opportunity to participate in Hastings College Mural Day. Six junior and senior artists competed in this year’s competition. The Hastings College mural competition is a great way to get young artists involved in a fun and competitive way, while building art skills.
“We go up to the front table, picked 3 random slips of paper, and each paper had a topic. From this we had a couple hours to merge these randomized words into a work of art. Our words were football players, asteroids, and donuts. For our topics our mural turned out quite well” junior Cassie Perry said.
With such a broad topic at their disposal, nobody envisioned the same thing.
“My vision for turnout of the mural was not at all similar to the turnout. After the team had helped me envision it, the picture became more clear,” Perry said.
All students that attended said that they had a great time and were glad art teacher Lisa Prickett asked them to participate.
To junior Angela Vu, the mural competition brought joy.
“We had to somehow incorporate all of the prompts and we all had really vivid imaginations which needed to be combined somehow. The painting represents creativity and happiness to me, because there were a lot of bright colors and glitter all over our mural,” Vu said.
Junior Beatriz Ramirez really enjoyed getting the chance to go because of the opportunity to meet new people that shared the same passion for art.
“This was a great opportunity to meet new people and see different techniques that were used,” Ramirez said.
The group didn’t place, but all three girls said that everyone was pleased with the outcome of their artwork and they can’t wait to compete again.
