Four months ago, Jean Davis was sitting at home on summer break, but now she has returned to the busy halls of Hastings High School. When students walk into room 248, they are immediately greeted with a pop of color and a smiling face. After taking a couple of years off, Davis is back and ready to teach.
Davis left to take care of her daughter, who was a newborn at the time, and was just waiting for an opportunity to come back. She wanted to come back to teaching students because she missed getting to know her students and teaching them something new in a way they can understand.
“When I left to be a stay-at-home mom, it was hard to leave because I love this job, and I always wanted to come back someday. I am so excited to be back,” Davis said.
Davis began wanting to be a teacher her junior year of high school when she took her first trip to Spain. She went to college for four years to get her teaching degree and then went back to school for two years to get her master’s degree. Before teaching at HHS, she worked for Head Start but ultimately decided teaching is what she wanted to do.
“At first, I was nervous to have my own classroom. After taking the classes I needed to become a teacher in Nebraska, I decided I was ready to try it. I’m really glad I did. I love teaching,” Davis said.
Davis became fluent in Spanish over time. She took Spanish in high school and decided to continue on into college. During college, she traveled to Spain and Costa Rica, and by then she was fully fluent in Spanish.
“I think it was really neat to live in a city because I’m not from a city. It was a cool experience to travel around by bus, to use public transportation, and make my way on a daily basis,” Davis said.
