The Hastings High School boys tennis team wrapped up its season at the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) Class B state tennis tournament Oct. 14-16 in Lincoln, where sophomore Zachary Schram represented the Tigers in No. 1 singles.
The tournament brought together top players from across Nebraska, giving Schram the opportunity to compete against athletes from several schools in the state. Matches were held at the Sid and Hazel Tennis Center and Woods Tennis Center.
Schram opened the tournament against Hudson Heiser of Lincoln Pius X. Heiser won the match 6-1, 6-0, sending Schram to the consolation bracket, where players who lose their opening match compete for additional placement opportunities.
Schram then faced Zane Robinson of Omaha Roncalli Catholic in his next match. The matchup proved more competitive, as Schram won the second set 6-3 after dropping the first set 6-3. The match went to a deciding tiebreaker, where Robinson narrowly defeated Schram 11-9 to secure the victory.
Although Schram did not advance to the placement rounds, his second match featured a close finish that required a tiebreaker to determine the winner. Competing at the state tournament also gave him experience against some of the strongest players in Class B.
The tournament marked the end of the Tigers’ season, providing a final opportunity to compete at the state level. As the team looks toward next season, the experience gained through postseason competition can serve as a foundation for continued improvement.
